Independence & Wellbeing Centre

What we do

Following an injury, survivors are often unable to work, participate fully in family life or take part in interests and hobbies. As a result survivors can become extremely isolated and unable to practise strategies or re-learn skills.  This results in further loss of confidence and self-esteem.

Our Independence & Wellbeing Centre provides a safe and supportive environment for survivors to work on individual goals, share experiences and re-gain the confidence necessary to take the next steps.
The benefits of our programmed activities are not always immediately evident.  We do not provide formal therapies, but all our activities have several therapeutic benefits spanning the whole range of common physical, cognitive and behavioral difficulties experienced.
e.g. Board Games–  social skills, concentration, confidence, memory, listening, making yourself understood, recognizing other people’s needs, planning, information processing.

Our focus is very much on increasing independence and moving people on to the next stage of their recovery.

Here are some of the activities we regularly provide:

Indoor Climbing
Cooking
Shopping
Planning                                                                                                                     Workshops e.g. Memory, Managing Anxiety, Healthy Living
Pool/Table tennis
Art & craft workshops
Board Games
Group quizzes
Cognitive exercises
Swimming
Badminton
Days Out                                                                                                                                                          IT Skills

Many of our service users will contribute to the planning, organisation and running of the day.  They may give a presentation on a subject of interest; they may create and deliver a quiz or develop a workshop around a skill they have e.g. needlecraft.

Alongside maximising independence the Independence & Wellbeing Centre also provides:

•  practical and emotional support
• respite for carers
• a meeting place where people can share experiences
• a social outlet where people can enjoy themselves, have fun and make new friends
